Understanding Jesus – Impacts All Of Life

Isaiah 6.1-8 & Philippians 2.6-11

Has Jesus changed your life?... Has He?… REALLY?

Do we want Jesus to impact the way we live daily?

Go with me to Isaiah chapter six... King Uzziah has died... And Isaiah comes to the Temple to consult with God concerning Israel’s future. While there...Isaiah sees God... High... Almighty... Lifted up...With angelic beings flying... Declaring...Holy... Holy... Holy is the Lord Almighty...

Understanding the awesome difference between himself and God... Isaiah falls on his face in worship saying... Woe is me... I am a sinful unclean man.

One of the Seraphim takes a peace of coal from the altar and touched Isaiah’s lips saying... Your sin guilt is taken away...You sin has been atoned for. At that point Isaiah said... Here I am Lord... Send me... Use me... Let me do your Kingdom Work.

Here it is church… A better understanding of God changed Isaiah’s life.

Now...Go with me to Philippians chapter two... There we’ll see Jesus for who He really is...

• Perhaps a better understanding of Jesus will impact our life... will change our life as it did Isaiah...

• Perhaps more of us will be found saying... here am I Lord... Use me... Let me be involved in your Kingdom ministry.

Are you there... Philippians two... Beginning with verse numbered six... Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death--even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

What can we learn from these verses?

We’ll understand six important facts from our walk through these verses...

First...We understand that Jesus is God.

This is not the only Scripture that gives us this understanding...

John 1.1-3 & 14... In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made... The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Colossians 1.15-20 reads... The Son is the image of the invisible God... The firstborn over all creation... For in Him all thing were created... Things in heaven and on earth... Visible and invisible. He is before all things and in Him all things hold together. For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him.

In our text... Paul indicates that... Jesus was in the form of God... His very nature was God. The Greek is Morphe... (More-fay)…Which speaks of the essential nature of a person or thing that... Does not change... Cannot change. Morphe speaks of one’s essence... Their nature... Character.

Jesus was God... It is what He is... Who He is.

Morphe describes...His unchangeable... His unalterable… essence.

Jesus is God... It’s essential to His nature... Again Scripture confirms this...

• Matthew tells us that His name is Immanuel... God with us.

• John 8.58 has Jesus saying... I tell you the truth... Before Abraham was born... I am!...

• The Hebrews’ Writer says... The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being.

• The Jews of Jesus’ day rejected Him for what reason?... Remember?... Because He was making Himself equal with God.

Here it is church... These verses tell us that... Jesus was God... Is God... And will always be God.

We will never be what God wants us to be until we understand our Savior is nothing less than God in the Flesh… Our Creator… Sustainer… Protector… Provider.

This brings us to understanding number two... Jesus became a man...

Who being in very nature God did not consider equality with God something to be... grasped... Seized... Held on to... Horded… But came in appearance as a man.

Even though Jesus was equal with God... He was willing to give up that equality.

Verse seven tells us...

He emptied himself...

• Poured it all out...

• Made Himself nothing.

Some think Jesus emptied himself of being… God... Deity... He didn’t!!

He didn’t... Because He couldn’t... Deity was... His essence... His nature... He is God...AnD He will always be god

So He couldn’t change... His essence... His nature... It’s who He is!… His being!

So...What did Jesus give up... What did he empty Himself of?...

In becoming Human... He gave up His glory.

• In John seventeen... Jesus prayed... Father… Give Me back the glory I had before the world began.

• On the Mount of Transfiguration... He pulled back His flesh nature somewhat and the Apostles saw His glory.

When Jesus came into the world... He veiled His glory... SEt it aside.

He gave up His honor.

Isaiah chapter 53 tells us that He had no beauty that people would desire Him... He was despised... Rejected... Hated... Spat upon... Beaten... Slapped... Mocked... Shamefully Crucified

Indeed!!... Jesus gave up His honor.

Second Corinthians 8.9... Even though He was rich... Yet He became poor for our sakes.

Think of it... God becomes Human... For… Our good... Our benefit... Our forgiveness.

Jesus gave up the exerciseof His own will.

He gave up making decisions... For His own good... For His own benefit...To do the will of the Father...

• That’s what He said... I came to do the will of My Father who sent Me.

• In the Garden it was... Not My will... But Thine be done.

• He came not only to do the will of the Father... He came to work all things out for our good our benefit... I came that you might have life and have it more abundantly.

Fourthly… He gave up His relationship with God the Father.

On the cross Jesus was heard saying... My God... My God... Why have you forsaken me?

Jesus’ relationship with the Father changed when He took on the sins of the world... My sin and yours.  Sin separates us from God... It had the same effect on Jesus when He took on our sin... Amen?

He gave up His privilege!

If you want to test a person’s... Character... His love... His determination... Dedication…Give Him privilege... And then ask them to give it up to help another... In favor of others.

Jesus came with Privilege... He was God in the flesh... The God man.

• He laid aside His inability to die... And went to the cross to forgive and save us.

• Jesus was a King who took off His robe... Stepped from His throne... To help His people… US!

Jesus gives up His sovereign God privilege... To serve and save us... Awesome!

This brings our third understanding... Jesus took the position of a slave.

Verse seven says... Taking the form of a slave... Doulos in the Greek.

Jesus didn’t come from being the King of Heaven... To become King of earth... He came from being the King of Heaven to be... a servant.... A slave… Doulos.

He took off the robe of Heaven’s majesty and put on the apron of a slave.

• Isaiah calls Him servant of the Lord...

• He came not to be served... But to serve...

• Luke 22.27 reads... I am among you as one who serves.

He came... Not only a slave of God... But a slave of sinners... He came for us... Suffered for us… Died on our behalf... Jesus didn’t die for His sin...But for ours.. Amen?

Here it is church... Jesus didn’t come wearing the mask of a slave... But took on the attributes the characteristics of one who submitted totally to the will of the Father.

Understanding Number four... Jesus came Dying for sinful People.

Interesting isn’t it that God did not select a third party to come save us?...

• Why didn’t He send an ANGEL... Like to Abraham... Isaac... Hagar... The shepherds... Mary... Or Joseph. An angel did bring the Law of Moses... Why not angels to bring our salvation?

• Maybe a GLORIFIED CHRIST as appeared to Paul on the road to Damascus... Or to John on the Isle of Patmos.

• Perhaps... God could have sent a MAN to die for us... Scripture does tell us that… There is no greater love than one man dying for another.

But God didn’t send us a THIRD PARTY... HE SENT HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON... In the likeness of sinful men... But without sin..

GOD BECOMES FLESH...Jesus is the God man... Who comes to die on our behalf... Incarnation... Can we grasp it?

I’m told that… There was a time on the Island of Formosa that they offered human sacrifices. One day their beloved Governor persuaded them to stop. After years of NO human sacrifices, the people became restless... Demanding a human sacrifice, their Governor told them.... All right... Tomorrow... You go deep into the forest and there you will find a man in a red robe with a mask and tied... Untie him....  OFFER HIM. THEY DID!!... And when they unmasked the sacrificed man it was none other than their beloved governor… Since that time there have been no human sacrifices in Formosa.

Again...We must point out that Jesus could not give up His deity... Because it was His essence... His nature.... But he did take on humanity...Verse 8 says... Being made in appearance as a man.

Jesus was not part God... Part man...Half God... Half man... Jesus didn’t OSCILLATE between…

• Being partly or occasionally God…

• And partly or occasionally human.

He was totally God and totally human… God who put on Humanity!!

Jesus did not put on the mask of humanity... Not at all... Fully God and Fully Man...This is the mystery of the incarnation.

• He had no Halo over His head...

• No glorified aura around Him...

• Didn’t walk five feet off the ground...

• He looked like us...

• Suffered as we suffer... Things that cause us pain... Pained Him.

• He became angry... Sleepy…

• He mourned...

• When you slapped Him... It would sting...

• Going without food made Him hungry...

• Going without water make Him thirsty...

• When you spit in His face... It made Him sick...

• When you whipped Him with a scourge...It hurt...

• When you drove nails in His hands...He bled...

• When you crucified Him He died.

He was in appearance as a man.

O listen to our wondrous story...

Counted once among the lost...

Jesus came from heaven'sglory...

Saving us at awful cost.

No angel could His place have taken,

Highest of the High though He...

The loved one on the cross forsaken...

Was One of the God Head three!

Understanding number five... In His humanity... Jesus dies for us.

Verse 8... He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death... Even death on a cross.

Church...Can we grasp it?...

God so loved the world... You and Me... That He gave His Only Begotten Son?...

God demonstrates His love to us... In that while we were yet sinners... Christ died for us.

• Ephesians 2.5 reads... He made us alive in Christ even when we were dead in transgressions...

It is by grace you have been saved.

• The Hebrews’ Writer tells us that... He died once for all mankind... The sinless for the sinner.

In the Garden it was... Not My will... But Thine be done... And Jesus died for the sins of all mankind... From Adam to the Second Coming.

On the cross... Jesus suffered God’s wrath of every sin ever committed...  Including mine and yours.

Amazing love...

How can it be...

That Thou O God

Could’st die for me.

Can you imagine?

• The creator of heaven and earth emerging as a newborn child?…

• Mucus in His ears and nostrils?…

• Wet and slippery from the amniotic fluid?…

• The Son of the most High God umbilically tied to a lowly Jewish girl?…

• God nursing from a young maiden’s breast?…

• Deity straining to focus His eyes on mother’s face?…

• The Light of the World squinting to see?

Mary did you know?…

When you kissed your baby… That you were kissing the face of God…

That your Baby Boy who walked where angels trod would walk on water…

• Give sight to the blind…

• Calm a storm…

• Rule nations…

• Save our sons and daughters…

Mary did you know the child you’re holding is… The great I Am?

Understanding number six... Jesus ascended into Heaven as a prince.

• God highly exalted Him...

• Bestowed on Him the name above every name.

• Mark 16.19 says... He was received into Heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.

We're not sure what name God gave Jesus as He entered Heaven... Most scholars believe it was... IS... The name... The title... LORD.

Today... Jesus rules...

• All authority has been given Him...

• All things have been put under His feet...

• He’s head over the church...

• At His coming He will Judge the world... Both living and the dead.

So...If Jesus is Lord... And He is!... Then every knee will bow... Every tongue will confess His Lordship.

Here it is church...

• We can bow before Him...

• Confess His name...

• Submit to His Lordship

• Make HIM the master of our life...

Now...Today... This New Year... Or... We can do it when He comes again in all His Glory with His Angels to Judge the world.

You see..

• Confessing His name...

• Bowing before Him…

• Submitting to His Lordship...

• Giving Him control of our life...

Today...Leads to eternal life... Waiting until He comes again leads to eternal separation from God and one another… It’s called Hell... The choice is ours!

Do we understand who Jesus really is this morning?...

Will we ignore Him... Or allow Him to… Impact our life... Change our life?

Will we be like Isaiah... Start this New Year saying...

Here am I Lord... Send me... Use me...

Let me do your will...

Be my Lord...

• Become the master of my life…

• Allow me to find my place to work in Your Kingdom

Come confess Jesus by... Faith... Repentance... And being born again in NewTestament baptism for the forgiveness of your sins...

For those of us who have confessed His name... Our challenge is to submit to… His Lordship... His mastership... In the coming New Year.

Come acknowledge Jesus as we stand and sing together.
