Teachers Who Make A Difference

I want to do two things with the time we have left this morning...

• One is to honor teaching and teachers... Noting some things that will make us A better teacher.

• The other is to talk about howto listen... How to be a better student.

First... We note that we are all under the commission to be both teachers and students.

Listen to Deuteronomy chapter six... These are the commands, decrees and laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the Lord your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life.

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the door-frames of your houses and on your gates.

Here it is class… We’re all teachers this morning… We can’t escape this fact… Each of us IS influencing somebody each moment… Even this moment!

As I made these notes… I was reminded of those men and women who have impacted my life and what that impact was; those who influenced me spiritually…

• My Parents…

• My Grandparents…

• Georgia’s family…Parents… And grandmother…

• My first Bible teacher… Eva Cullen…

• Sister Henderson…

• Viola Brown…

• Eugene Henderson…

• Tommy Kelton…

• Tom Dockery…

• O. L. Daily…

• Glen Oxford…

• Jimmy Allen…

• Joe L. Banks…

• F. I. Stanley…

Truth is… Every one of us has names like these… Don’t we?

Now... I want to do somethinga little different...

I want us to stop and thank God for those who have made a difference in our life... As parents... teachers...Preachers... And Elders.

I’m gonna ask Jerry Orr to lead us in a prayer as we think of those who have taught us... Mentored us...Lived like Jesus before us...

Jerry will lead  the prayer... But I want you to name your own list of teachers mentors... Jerry!

Let’s mention some attitudes that are necessary for us to be good...

Teachers… Models… Mentors… Examples…

Things we should cultivate in our lives if we are going to make a difference.

Teachers make a difference by having a servant’s heart.

What is it in life that we really want to do?

How much like Jesus do we really want to be?

Jesus said… I came not to be served… But to serve.

The world says…

• Climb theladder… Get to the top…

• Grab all the political clout you can…

• Become a...Supervisor… Manager… President.

The push for worldly greatness is control… CONTROLLING others!!

The push for spiritual greatness is found In serving.

Jesus said… The greatest in the Kingdom is the one who... serves… Teaches… Models.

Teachers don’t know when to stop... caring...Loving.... And serving.

Here’s the question!...  Do you... Does your preacher… Have a teacher’s heart?

Teachers make a difference because of their understanding.

Go with me to Luke chapter one... We find two people there… Two women…

• A young girl in her teens is pregnant... With child out of wedlock.

• There is another woman… She is much older... And she too is pregnant.

What do you do when you're16… 17… 18 years old and pregnant without a husband? You can’t go home to mom and say… This child is a product of the Holy Spirit. They’re not likely to understand such an explanation.

But… I tell you where you can go... You can go to Aunt Elizabeth’s house.

She’ll understand Holy Spirit Conception.  So Mary arrives… And sure enough… Elizabeth understands… And accepts Mary justas she is... Demanding no other explanation.

Listen to me class... We need more hearts in our churches like Aunt Elizabeth…

• Open hearts…

• Patient hearts…

• Understanding hearts…

• Accepting…

• Affirming…

• Encouraging hearts.

God... Give us a church full of Bible teachers… Who like Aunt Elizabeth…Are willing to make a difference… With and in our young people... AMEN?

Teachers make a difference by example.

Genuine teachers are those who are willing to go-out-of-their-way to be the right kind of example and role model for our youth and adults.

Timothy was such a good boy for Two reasons…

• Timothy was the product of a loving caring mother and grandmother... Lois & Eunice. They demonstrated their faith in such a way that he couldn’t help but become God’s person…God’s man.

• And of course theteaching mentoring life of the Apostle Paul.

The church... This church…Our world… Needs more...

• Elders…

• Preachers…

• Bible Teachers…

• Men and women…

Who will Model… Mentor…Exemplify… our faith… Before our young people daily.

Question… Are we willing to make a difference… Here… Today… Right now… Right where we are?

Teachers make a difference because of their expectations.

Hannah had to be one of the greatest teachers of all time.

Hannah expected Samuel to be God’s person… And he was!!!

Church… It was no accident that…

• Isaac…

• Jacob…

• Joseph…

• Moses…

• Samuel…

• John the Baptist…

• And Timothy

Turned out to be great men of God...

Their families and teachers... wanted... Prayed... And Expected them to be somebody special for and to the Lord.  Expected them to become great in the Lord’s kingdom... And they were... And they were.

Teachers have an intense love for souls.

Without such love… It is impossible to be a really good teacher.

I’m not speaking of a sentimental feeling… But a love of First Corinthian chapter thirteen...

• A disciplined love…

• A love that’s... Patient… Kind… Gentle…

• Never jealous or arrogant…

• A love that is patient with each and every student…

• Love that never acts unbecomingly…

• Is not easily provoked…

• Keeps no record of wrongs…

• A love that bears all things.

Teachers must live as we teach.

You see… Behind every Bible lesson are two teachers…

• The teaching teacher…

• And the living teacher.

Every teacher must be a pattern as well as a pulpit.

Teachers are to be living letters from God.

Teaching that makes a difference is letting others see who we are.

By our becoming… vulnerable…Open… Willing to confess our faults and shortcomings.

Church… It’s okay to let others see our weaknesses and struggles... Our humanity... Confess your faults one-to-another... Pray for one another.

Teachers must be prepared…

Church… This is an appeal for study and Preparation.

Paul admonishes… Study…Study… To show yourselves acceptable to God.

I overheard a deacon in this church ask a lady to teach… And he said… You don’t have to prepare… All you have to do is pick up a lesson plan on your way to class… Wrong…Wrong… Wrong.

We will never become great teachers without… Work… Study… Preparation.

Genuine teaching is information that leads to transformation.

Any transformation taking place in your classes?... Perhaps there is no teaching going on there!!

We must beloyal to our calling.

A teacher must be faithful in all things.

Give a man a teaching responsibility that doesn’t come on Sunday or Wednesday evenings…Who is always late to class… And it won’t be long until the whole class won’t be here for those services… Nor be on time.

Church… Matthew 6.33... Seek you first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness was not written just to fill space in the Bible… It’s a way God wants us to live.

May God bless our efforts to become better... Parents... Grandparents... Teachers... Preachers... Elders and Ministry Leaders... Amen?

Allow me to suggest some things

that will make us better students....

Teaching is not a spectator sport... It demands some participation by those listening.

Bring your Bible... Sit close to the front...

Don’t be overly concerned about the clock...

Maintain eye contact with the teacher as if in private conversation...

Learn sympathetically... Overlook the teacher’s small mistakes...

Resist distractions... Avoid being a distraction...

Actually listen... Pay attention...Listen as if you were the only one in the room...

Study... Think... Exert some mental effort... Be an active listener...

Listen looking for ideas for self-improvement...

Listen in view of eternity...

Understand that God is with us in our assemblies...

Be glad to hear God... Speak... Teach... Preach... I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord.
