There’s A Judgment Day Coming

This week…We’ve been studying the Noah Narrative from Genesis 6-9…

Class… I hope you believe this narrative… I hope you agree with Paul that it was written for our learning…And that in it we might find hope.

This narrative contains God’s Judgment upon an evil world… Even though He promised never to destroy the earth again by water… With a global flood… God does promise another Judgment Day for all mankind.

The question becomes… Are we ready?... Will we be like Noah and his family?... Or like the rebellious and unrighteous of his day.

Come… Let’s see what we can learn…

First... Noah teaches us that we must not ignore the reality of Judgment.

Daniel Webster was asked…What was the greatest thought to ever pass through your mind?... To which he replied… My accountability to God.

Down deep inside of us… We are all aware of the fact that somewhere in the future… In a time known only to God… There is going to be a day of judgment…

• A time when all wrongs will be punished…

• And right will be rewarded.

Even though we acknowledge the idea of judgment… For some reason… We tend to ignore the severity And longevity of that judgment.

Jesus speaks of judgment in Matthew 24... As it was in the days of Noah... So it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood... People were eating and drinking... Marrying and giving in marriage... Up to the day Noah entered the ark... And they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away... That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.

Sinful rebellion was the problem in Noah’s day and is the problem in our generation.

We must agree that... Moral decay is obvious in our culture… And that… Like in the day of Noah… It’s only getting worse so that even the thoughts and intents of the heart seem to be always evil.

• There’s Sexual Immorality

• Honesty... Simply telling the truth... Is becoming a lost virtue.

• Many in our culture are unable to distinguish between right and wrong...

• We fail to see… Or care less… About any consequences to sin.

• Business & political ethics have deteriorated to the point that almost anything is acceptable.

I think a big reason for this epidemic of immorality is that people ignore the reality of God’s promised judgment...

•  They ignored it in Noah’s day...

• They’re ignoring it today.

Ted Turner spoke for most of our world when he said... If indulging in wine and women means you end up in hell... That’s where I want to go.

WOW!!...It’s evident that Mr. Turner is ignoring the reality of a Judgment Day.

But here is God’s Word on the issue… The Lord... He is a compassionate and gracious God... Slow to anger... Abounding in love and faithfulness... Maintaining love to thousands... And forgiving wickedness... Rebellion and sin... Yet... He does not leave the guilty unpunished... He punishes the children... And their children... For the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.

Paul wrote... Behold the goodness and the severity of God.

Peter spoke of His goodness and severity when he said that... God did not want any to perish... But that He was patient so that all had time to come to repentance.

Remember... When we were kids playing marbles?... Before every game... We would decide whether we were going to play for keeps... Or for fun.

Well class... Noah teaches us that... IN LIFE... We are playing for keeps… Amen?

From Noah we learn that... We can be spared from God’s judgment.

Listen to Peter as he refers to Noah... For if God did not spare angels when they sinned... But sent them to hell... Placing them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment... If He did not spare the ancient world when He brought the flood on its ungodly people... But protected Noah... DID YOU CATCH IT?... But protected Noah... A preacher of righteousness... And seven others... If this is so... LISTEN NOW... If this is so...Then the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials and to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment...While continuing their punishment.

There are some things in those verses which are a little tough to understand... But the main point is clear.... God’s people will be protected... Even when the Lord is executing judgment on the ungodly.

This narrative proves that God protects His people in the midst of judgment.

Thirdly… We learn that… THE JUDGMENT DAY IS CERTAIN.

Listen to these passages that teach that a Judgment Day is coming.

Acts 17.31… He has set a day when He will judge the world by the One He has appointed.

Hebrews 9.27… Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment…

Second Corinthians 5.10… For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ.

Here it is class… There is no escaping the Day of Judgment… It’s an appointment that we must all keep.

Some people will be excited on that day.. Others will be sad… But the Judgment Day is coming… It is certain… As certain as Noah’s Flood Day.. There’ll be no escape.

Point number four… JESUS WILL BE THE JUDGE.

John 5.22 & 27 reads… The Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son… And He has given Him authority to judge because He is the Son of Man.

From Mars Hill... We hear Paul say… For He… God…Has set a day when He will judge the world with justice by the man He has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising Him from the dead.

In our judicial system…There’s room for mistakes… There is an appeal process.

However…. With Jesus… He is omniscient… Truth is known… He is the Ultimate Supreme Court Judge…His verdict is true and accurate…. His decision final.

An umpire called Babe Ruth out on strikes. Babe argued with the call and saying… There’s 40,000 people in these stands who know that was a ball… Tomato head.  The umpire said… Maybe so… But my decision is the only one that counts.

With Jesus there’ll be no negotiating…

Second Corinthians 5.12 tells us that our eternal destiny has been sealed by the things we did while in the body… For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due to him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

In the time of Noah… We don’t see any appeals… No second chances.

Number five…  When will it be… and WHAT WILL HAPPEN ON THat DAY?

The Day of Judgment will begin with the Second Coming of Jesus.

Listen to these verses from First Corinthians 15… First & Second Thessalonians… And Matthew 25… Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed-- in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. We do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord’s own word, we tell you that we who are stillalive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precedethose who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord for ever…

This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony… When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

The sequence of events will go something like this…

• There will be an unmistakable cry from an angel.

• There will be a trumpet call such as has never been heard.

• Christ and His angels will visibly return… In a flaming fire… With a loud command.

• Jesus will bring the souls of saved men and women with Him as He returns.

• The dead body of believers in Christ will rise from their graves.

• Believers who are alive will be changed in a flash… In the twinkling of an eye…

• These changed believers will be caught up to meet Jesus and those other souls in the air.

• The rest of the dead will be raised.

• Christ will sit on His throne with all nations gathered before Him.

First Peter 3.10 and the book of Revelation seem to indicate that before the Judgment begins… The earth and sky will be destroyed by fire… The day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare (or burned up). Then I saw a great white throne and Him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from His presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened.

At this point we gotta ask… What’s the basis for our judgment?

I saw the dead, great and small, standing before thethrone, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life… Dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.

From these verses it looks like there’ll be Three books opened… And we’ll be judged from what is written in these books…

One appears to be the Book of Life… Where the names of the saved are written.

We know this Book has been around a long time… At least back to the time of Moses or beyond… Probably from the beginning of time.

  • Exodus 32.32-33 speaks of God removing sinners from His book.

  • Psalms 69.28 speaks of The Book of Life…That contains the names of the righteous.

On one occasion… The disciples of Jesus were preaching and casting out demons. They came back to Jesus and they were rejoicing about it saying… Even the demons are subject unto us. Then Jesus, in Luke 10.20 said… Don't rejoice because the demons are subject unto you… Rejoice because your names are written in heaven.

Another Book appears to contain The record of our life on earth.

Another Book would be opened…God’s Word as the basis for this judgment.

Listen to Paul as he speaks of our Judgment…

Romans 2.6 & 7… God will give to each person according to what he has done. To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, He will give eternal life. But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.

Second Corinthians 5.10… For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

You remember in Matthew 25… Jesus made it clear that it will be our works or service to others that will help us enter into eternal life.

After this Judgment…We’ll witness an eternal separation.

In Matthew 25… Jesus proceeds to separate the people…

• The sheep on His right…

• The goats on his left.

• The sheep represent the righteous… The saved…

• The goats the lost… The unrighteous.

Those on the left are sent into eternal punishment… Where there will be weeping… Crying… Gnashing of teeth…Eternal regret.

On the Right…The saved… Those made righteous by the blood of Jesus will be ushered into the presence of God… Where they will be forever.

And whosoever was not found written in the book of life, was cast into the lake of fire.

Then these will hear the solemn word from Jesus… Depart from me, Inever knew you.

This extreme separation is alluded to by Jesus in the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus… Let’s listen to Jesus as He addresses this concept of Judgment and its separationin Luke chapter sixteen… Beginning with the verse numbered 19… There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire. But Abraham replied, Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us. He answered, Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father’s house, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment. Abraham replied, They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them. No, father Abraham, he said, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent. He said to him, If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.

Amazing isn’t it that Jesus tells this story… And a few weeks later a man named Lazarus died and was raised from the dead… And instead of believing Jesus…They tried to kill him.

Sometimes… It’seasier for us to… Get mad at the preacher… Kill the messenger OR… stay home from the truth rather than obey it.

One last point… ARE we ready FOR THE JUDGMENT DAY?

If I understand the Bible correctly…If we die before the Lord returns… Our eternal fate is sealed as if Jesus returned at that moment.

Paul speaks of the Child of God being present with God at death…

He says… To be absent in the body is to be present with God.

In Philippians he speaks ofhis two options… One is dying and going to be with the Lord… The other is living and working in the Kingdom.

Scripture appears to teach that how we die is how we’ll be raised… Nothing happens between death and the Judgment Day that would change our eternal destiny.

You see class…

• If we have placed our faith in Jesus Christ…

• Been willing to repent of our sins…

• Confess His Holy Name…

• If we have been born again in New Testament baptism…

There is no condemnation… That’s Romans 8.1… There is therefore now no condemnation (judgment) to them which are inChrist Jesus.

Jesus puts it this way in John 5.24… Verily I say unto you, he that hears my word and believes on Him who sent me has everlasting life and shall not come into condemnation, but is passed from death unto life.

Mark 16.16 has Jesus saying… Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

God’s protection rests upon the faithful believer today as it did on Noah and his family.

If you’re not a Christian… A Child of God…. If your name is not in His Book Of Life… Don’t let this study pass without accepting God’s forgiveness through Jesus.

Steve Winger from Lubbock,Texas… Writes about his last college test… A final in a logic class known for its difficult exams…

The professor told the class they could help themselves on the exam by bringing as much information to the exam as could fit on a piece of notebook paper. Most students crammed as many facts as possible on their 8-1/2 x 11 sheet of paper.

But one student walked into class… Placed a piece of notebook paper on the floor… And had a graduate logic student stand on the paper.

The graduate student told Steve everything he needed to know.

He was the only student to receive an “A.”

The ultimate final exam will come when we stand before God and He asks… Why should I let you in to heaven’s eternal bliss?

You see… On our own we cannot pass the exam.

Our creative attempts to earn eternal life will fall far short… We need Jesus to stand in for us.

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith…

And this not from yourselves… It is the gift of God…

Not by works, so that no-one can boast…

We are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus…

For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.

MAY GOD BLESS OUR STUDIES Together.
