Confession

Letting The World Know We Belong To Jesus

Matthew 10.32-33  Romans 10.9-10   1 Timothy 6.12   1 John 4.14-15

Philippians 2.9-11  Hebrews 10.19-25

For the past few Sundays... We’ve been examining those concepts that are crucial to our salvation...

• We examined Faith....

• Baptism...

• And last Sunday we looked at Forgiveness...Not just our own forgiveness... But the part our forgiving others plays in our salvation.

We heard Jesus say if we forgive others God will forgive us...

Paul admonished... Forgive as you have been forgiven.

This morning we look at confession.

Not the confession of Sins committed.

But confessing Jesus as... the christ… Messiah… The promised one!

The only begotten son of God…

• We’ll see that Confession is our promising to submit to His lordship.

Just how crucial is confession to our salvation...

Let’s hear some Scriptures...

Matthew 10.32-33… From the lips of Jesus... Whoever acknowledges... Confesses me before men… I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before men…  I will disown him before my Father in heaven.

Romans 10.9-10… If you confess with your mouth…Jesus is Lord… And believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead… You will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified…And it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.

1 Timothy 6.12… Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

1 John 4.14-15…  And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God… God lives in him and he in God.

Philippians 2.9-11… Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name… That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow… In heaven and on earth and under the earth… And every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord… To the glory of God the Father.

The Greek word translated Confess or Confession is HOMOLOGOUS.

It’s a compound word... Homo meaning self... Logos... Meaning word.

So... HOMOLOGOUS literally means…

• To say again the same thing…

• To agree…

• To consent…

• To acknowledge…

• To pledge our submission by a verbal agreement.

Colon Brown in his Dictionary of New Testament Theology says… Homologous is a legal word...Where a man agrees with the statement of another. Now here is the important part. This agreeing expresses itself in a promise or commitment…In a legal contract.

as a confession... Homologous is equivalent to a legal binding oath.

When applied to New Testament Christianity confession Means…

• To confess… the Deity… The Lordship… The SOVEREIGNty… Of Christ.

• To agree that the historical Jesus of Nazareth was indeed the only begotten son of God who came as the Savior of the world.

• Confession is agreeing…That we’ll commit ourselves to his Lordship… His sovereignty.

We see this contractual commitment expressed in Hebrews... For instance...

Hebrews 4.14 & 10.22-23 says... Since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens… Jesus the Son of God… Let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.  The Greek for profess is HOMOLOGOUS.

The writer continues... Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith... Having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience… Having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess.  (Here profess is a translation of our Greek word HOMOLOGOUS. Let us then hold unswervingly to the hope we confess... Because God is faithful.

We’re hearing the Hebrews’ writer admonish us to be faithful to our confession of Jesus… To besound... Firm... INTENT… upon living out our confession of faith in Jesus.

Access your Worship Bulletin and read our text with me... Hebrews 10... Here the writer is describing our conversion... And how we must be faithful… I wait on you at the verse numbered 19... Ready?...

Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Here it is church genuine Biblical confession is more than walking down a church aisle... Saying that we believe in Jesus before our baptism.

This isn’t the end of the journey... There is more... There is a life to be lived.

So...We’re looking for what it means to live out our confession... What it really means to confess Jesus as Lord.

You see…Confession is a sign of a changed heart... repentance is that change.

Confession is a... verbal…lifestyle... indication… That the change... That genuine biblical repentance has taken place... That we are indeed different people...Raised from baptism to live a new life... A different life... By submitting to the Lordship of Jesus.

In1990 Brett Butler left the San Francisco Giants to play baseball with the L. A. Dodgers. The next time the two teams met... Butler was the center of attention. He was loved by everybody... His former teammates... Coaches and fans… Everybody!!

When the lineups were announced... The entire crowd came to their feet and roared as Butler walked on the field. The people of San Francisco still loved him... Even in a Dodger uniform. Perhaps they felt that he was still a Giant at heart.

When Brett heard and saw the response of the crowd... he walked up to his new manager... Tommy Lasorda... And gave him a big burley HUG. The Giant fans begin to boo and hiss. After the game... the press asked Butler... Why he did what he did... He said to show my loyalty...  I had turned a page in my career...

I am now a L.A. Dodger... Not a Giant...  I just wanted them to know that I am a L. A. Dodger through and through... From the heart.

Remember the movie42... About Jackie RobINson? Remember when the Brooklyn Dodgers played in Cincinnati’s Crosley Field. The Fans... Players... And Managers...booed Jackie Robinson as he came on the field? As the boos and hissing grew louder and louder... Pee Wee Reese... Who was Captain of the Dodgers... Slowly walked from his position at shortstop to first base... Put his arms around Robinson and hugged him... Silence fell over the crowed... You could have heard a pin drop.

Pee Wee Reese wanted the whole baseball world to know that Jackie Robinson was a teammate who had his support. Pee Wee Reese was confessing both Robinson’s supremacy and right to be in the world of Baseball.

Church...Can I say this and you not become upset with me... Some of us need to publicly hug Jesus... Confess jesus... Daily... AMEN?

Some of us need to let the world know that things are no longer the same.

That things have radically changed...

• That we have turned a page in life...

That we now belong to Jesus Christ..

That we are on His team...

That we are no longer buying into this world’s story... Marching to this world’s drum...

We have a new set of priorities...

New allegiances...

New loyalties...

That we have a new Lord and King of our life...

That old things have passed away… Behold all things have become new.

Indeed… At our new birth...We have been raised to walk in a new life... A different life... We are a new person!!

Question... Does the world see us… you and your preacher... Confessing Jesus... hugging Jesus?... Or... Are we trying to walk with one foot in this world... And one foot in His world?

In our Wednesday Evening Discussion Class... We noted how that Israel in Goshen had life easy... The area was lust… They were working for the King… Pharaoh… Good wages… A great place to live… Vacation time off when the Nile floodedLIFE WAS GOOD!!  So much so that they were beginning to buy into the Egyptian story... The Egyptian way of life... Even into Egyptian idolatry.  So… Now God is about to move them from the middleclass joys of Goshen to the Sinai Desert.

Are we like Israel in Egypt?... Has American life become so good that we are buying into the Western World’s story... Into the American way of living... So much so that we are placing upper middleclassConsumerism…Pleasure…Privilege… MaterialismBefore God and His Kingdom Righteousness?

Must God move us into some desert circumstance in order to save us?... Or will we remain faithful to our confession of God’s story... His way of living?... Sobering question… Amen?

Confession of Jesus means that... God’s story... God’s world... His way to live... Must be our PRIMe objective... Amen?

Let’s finish the lesson... Noting some ways we fail to

acknowledge… Confess… Jesus to the world around us...

By compartmentalizing our lives.

Sometimes we try to live...

One life on Sunday morning... And another life during the week... This is not good!

One life here at church... Among these people... And another with those of the world.

Christianity is not a coat that we can put on and take off as we see fit.

Christianity is not an attitude that we can store in the glove compartment of our car... Then take out when we arrive on the church parking lot… Either we belong to God... Or we belong to Satan.

The concept of half-and-half Christianity is not a product of Heaven...But of Satan.

The Bible teaches from cover-to-cover that… God will have no rivals... It has always been… No other Gods before Me… Seek first His Kingdom of righteousness

We fail to confess Jesus by a weak commitment.

When we hug Jesus... We must hug HimNot halfheartedly… But with all our... Heart...Mind... Body... Soul… All our being!!

Jesus gives us a glimpse of the right heart in the parable about the pearl-of-great-price.  The pearl merchant...LEFT ALL... SOLD ALL... To purchase this one pearl.

After telling the Parable... Jesus said to His disciples... If any of you want to be My follower... My disciple…

You must put aside your personal wants...

Your selfish ambitions...

Your private agendas...

Deny yourself...Die to self... Take up your cross... And follow Me. If you try to keep your life for yourself... You will lose it. But if you give up your life for Me... You will find true life.

Sometimes…We fail to confess Jesus because of incorrect priorities.

We are afraid we’re gonna miss-out on this world’s joys if we follow Jesus too closely.

You recall Jesus’ narrative about a great dinner prepared... The invitations were sent out...

• One excused himself because he had to bury a family member.

Some excused themselves because they needed to examine a new piece of property.

Another excused himself because he needed to try a new team of oxen.

Still another said... I can’t come... I just got married.

There are those who are not here this morning... And will not be seen hugging Jesus this week... Because they are afraid they are going to miss out on something this world has to offer... A fishing trip... A round of golf... A weekend at the lake... A drive to the mountains... To the beach... etc!!

Here it is church... Weekending is killing our commitment to Jesus.

Oh how easy it is to give Jesus... Second... Third... Fourth... Place in life... Amen?

Have our priorities changed... Is Jesus’ place slipping?... Seek first… The Kingdom…. The life… The story… Of God and His righteousness.

Finally we fail to understand that Confession demands a change in Lordship.

Romans ten says... If you confess with your mouth... Jesus is Lord...

Confession is our acknowledging That JESUS IS LORD.

Funny isn’t it?... How... Everybody wants a SAVIOR... Nobody wants a LORD?

Everybody wants to be saved...

Nobody wants to be told how to think and behave.

The idea that we can accept Jesus as our Savior... And not make Him LordNot allow Him to rule our... Attitudes…Disposition... behavior… Is foreign to Scripture.

Salvation is a result of acknowledging Jesus as the LORD and King of our life.

No man has truly accepted Jesus as Savior... Who has not accepted Him as LORD.

Can I say that again? We cannot accept Jesus as Savior... Without accepting Him as Lord & King of our life!

Genuine New Testament confession is our saying...

• Speak Lord... Your servant hears...

Ask Lord... And I will respond...

Point the way Lord... And I will go

Provide me with an opportunity Lord...And I will labor with you... And for you.

Open the door to Concordia and Village House... And I’ll serve the Jesus in those folk.

Show me how you want me to behave...The attitude you want me to have... And I will.

Ask me to teach a Bible class Lord...And I will teach it.

Give me another chance to be an example to my children and grandchildren... I’ll take it.

Confession is our saying with Isaiah...Here am I Lord send me.

Our confession of Jesus means that we are... totally... Totally… committed to obeying Him.

Here it is church... Jesus never intended... for us to come to Bella Vista... Just to enjoy one another... And not serve... Not live out our confession.

We each have a choice... We as a body of believers have a choice...

We can be known for our condemning nature... For our rudeness and mean spiritedness...

Or we can be known for our Jesus-like attitude of love & understanding...

As we lift up Jesus to the world... Which will it be?

Is our confession... winsome... Or… worrisome?

There is no doubt that our confession of Jesus is a crucial part of our salvation.

If you are here... And not a child of God... We give you another opportunity... By faith... Repentance (A change of lifestyle)… Confession of His Holy Name... And New Testament baptism... Immersion in water for the forgiveness of your sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Perhaps...As a child of God... Our lifestyle is not consistent with our confession…. Perhaps we need to make some changes in our daily walk.

Hear it is… God has afforded each of us one more time to... Come confess Jesus...

Truth isWe may not have another… Come confess Him… As we stand and sing.
