Jesus – There Is Power In His Blood

Hebrews 9.11-14 & 22-27

There’s an interesting passage in Leviticus 17… Verse 11… Here God tells Moses that life of the flesh is in the blood… Blood is essential to the preservation of life.

We can live without a lot of things… But without blood there is no life.

Blood contains the power of life in at least six ways… There are at least six functions of our blood…

• It transports oxygen and nutrients from the lungs and digestive system.

• It removes Carbon Dioxide and Cellular Waste.

• Proper blood flow keeps our core body temperature at a steady 37 degrees Celsius.

• White cells help kill pathogens and microbes that stray into the body.

• Blood substances like platelets and fibrin help blood clot when we’re wounded.

• Blood plasma also carries other chemical messengers such as hormones and protein.

When Scripture says… Life of flesh is in the blood… It’s speaking of physical life… However… When we flip this over… Spiritual life is also in the blood…His blood… Jesus’ blood.

Some today criticize Christianity calling it… a bloody religion.

But God has always demanded that... blood be a part of mankind’s religious activity.

•When Adam and Eve sinned... They became aware of their nakedness... So they sewed fig leaves together to hide their nudity.

This was not sufficient in God’s sight... So He covered them in animal skins… Some animal had to shed its blood to cover their sin guilt.

•It was Cain’s... Animal... Blood... Sacrifice that was pleasing to God.

•Noah offered animal sacrifices after exiting the Ark in appreciation to God for saving them.

•Abraham offered blood sacrifices.

•The Law of Moses was built upon a sacrificial system that... For the most part... Was blood drenched.

•When Jesus came… It was His blood that was offered to take away our sins...

The way of the cross was a way of blood... His scars were blood scars.

For instance…

•We sense the blood of Jesus shed during the Garden Prayer…

•We see the blood shed in the scourging...

•In the crown of thorns...

•In the nails driven into His hands and feet...

•When the sword pierced His side.

Who can deny that His blood was offered as an atonement for our sins?

It was Jesus who said… I am the way… The truth… And the Life…

Indeed… Spiritual life is in the blood… His blood.

In fact… There are at least forty-three references to the blood of Christ in the New Testament… All of which testify to its importance in the salvation and daily life of the believer.

So… From this point on… I want this to be more of a Bible study than a sermon…

As we examine The functions of His blood in our spiritual life...

Matthew 27.4 has Judas the betrayer speaking of Jesus’ blood as innocent blood.

Old Testament sacrifices were to be lambs without spot or blemish.

So… Jesus becomes our perfect sacrifice because He was without sin.

I Peter l.19 has Peter declaring His blood precious… The precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without spot or blemish.

1John 1.7 says His blood is a continual… cleansinG… purifying… Agent.

Revelation 1.5 testifies that… It’s Jesus’ blood that frees us from the guilt of sin.

Acts 20.28 tells us that His blood has purchased our pardon.

In Ephesians 1.7 & Colossians 1.14 it is a redeeming Blood.

Romans 5.9 says it is a justifying blood.

Colossians 1.20 it is the peacemaking blood.

Hebrews 13.12 tells us that His is a sanctifying blood…

Then Hebrews 10.28 & 29 has this stern warning Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him?...

Matthew 26.28 is the first reference in the New Testament to His blood… Where Jesus says… This is my blood of the new covenant… Which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

Church…Reading these Scriptures tell us without doubt that A bloodless religion is useless.

Come…Let’s see what we can learn about

the Power to be found in the blood of Jesus…

Access a Worship Bulletin… And let’s read from Hebrews chapter nine... Beginning with the verse numbered elevenWhen Christ came as high priest of the good things that are already here… He went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not man-made… That is to say… Not a part of this creation. He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves… But he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood… Having obtained eternal redemption. The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. How much more, then… Will the blood of Christ… Who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God… Cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death… So that we may serve the living God!...

Now to verse twenty-two... In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. It was necessary, then, for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. For Christ did not enter a man-made sanctuary that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence. Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment.

The first and primary function of… His blood is that it gives us personal access… to the Father... To God… By making us PriestS.

Under the Law of Moses... People had no access to God except through a Priest.

So…Each year... He would go into the Most Holy Place offering a blood sacrifice for the people.

Here’s the goodnews for us... When Jesus shed His blood on the Cross... The veil dividing the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place was torn from top-to-bottom... Indicating that Jesus has now become our High Priest... And thatwe...Personally... Individually...Have access to the Father... To God through Him and His blood.

The Hebrews’ Writer speaks of this truth in 10.20 where he writes... By a new and living way opened for us through the veil...  That is... His body.

Listen to God in Revelation 1.5 & 6... To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve God the Father.

Peter speaks of our being a royal priesthood.

In fact… Three times in the Book of Revelation... We’re declared to be a kingdom of priestS.

Listen as I read the entire verse of Leviticus 17.11For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life.

His blood gives each of us Personal Access to the father!... I am the way… The truth… And the life… There is no access to the Father except by Me… Through Me.

Do you want access to God?... To the promises of Jesus… To heaven?... Then we must accept the blood of Jesus as our way truth and life.

Secondly…We learn that His blood powerfully provides Forgiveness and eternal redemption.

Again…The Hebrews’ Writer takes us back to the Old Testament… And the Ark of the Covenant…

The Ark was a box made of Acacia wood overlaid with Gold… With a slab of Gold on top known as the Mercy SeatWhere two Cherubim faced each other gazing down on the seat.

Inside the Ark were three items...

Aaron’s rod which budded...

•A pot of Manna...

•And the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments.

Each year the High Priest would slay the sacrifical lamb and sprinkle its blood upon the Mercy Seat.

The Law of Moses... Which the people could not adequately obey... Was under that Mercy Seat.

So...When God looked down upon His Law... He would not see the Law broken... But rather a seat of mercy covered with the blood of the lamb.

When God looks upon us...

• He doesn’t see my sin and yours…

He doesn’t see our failures and inadequacies…

He doesn’t see the law we have disobeyed in so many ways…

God sees the blood of Jesus... Who kept His law perfectly… And has become our perfect law of liberty!

Listen to verses twelve through fourteen againHe did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves… But he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by… By his own blood… Having obtained eternal redemption. The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctified them so that they are outwardly clean. How much more… Then… Will the blood of Christ… Who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God… Cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death… So that we may serve the living God!

The Hebrews writer is contrasting the old system with its...

•Law keeping…

•Religious Rituals…

•And animal sacrifices…

To the New and better way in Jesus.

Our salvation is not dependent upon our own... Law keeping… Religious rituals… And good works But upon the Blood of Christ.

We are not dependent upon the blood of animals… Offered in some crude man-made… Tent… Tabernacle… Temple… for forgivenessBut the blood of Jesus offered once for all on the cross.

Here it is church… Scripture teaches that… We have been… Bought… Purchased… With a price… And the price is the Blood of God’s own Son…

Listen to these verses…

1 Peter 1.18& 19… For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.

Hebrews 9.12… He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption.

Indeed!...It’s the blood of Jesus that forgives… Redeems… saves… us.

We learn thatHis blood is our path to peace and contentment.

I’m not gonna preach this as much as just allow Scripture to make the points for us…

FirstIsaiah 59.2 tells us our condition before Jesus… Before the blood of Christ… Your iniquities have separated you from your God… Your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear.

Ephesians 2.13-17 speaks of our peace in Jesus… But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ. For He Himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulations. His purpose was to create in Himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace, and in this one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which He put to death their hostility. He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.

Then there is 1 John 1.7 & 9… If we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Genuine Peace comes from… knowingAcknowledging…That we’ve been reconciled to God... That we are in fellowship with Him because we are the light of His truth.

Contentment comes from knowing that we are saved and safe in the arms of Jesus.  Knowing that His blood cleanses us moment-by-moment... Freeing us from sin’s guilt.

It was John who wrote… I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

This faith fact prompted Paul to write... There is now therefore... No condemnation to those who are in Christ.

Do you and your preacher have this peace…

This Genuine contentment…

No!!... Why??… Why are we not confident in our forgiveness and eternal salvation?... Is it because we have not placed our sins under the blood of Jesus?

One more… The blood of Jesus leads us home to heaven.

Again…I don’t want to preach this point as much as I want to let God speak for Himself from the Book of Revelation…

After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no-one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. Then one of the elders asked me, “These in white robes--who are they, and where did they come from?” I answered, “Sir, you know.” And he said, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.

Well…What do we need to do this morning to benefit from the wonder working power in the blood of Jesus?

Do we need to place our sins under His blood by… Faith… A changed life… And being born again in New Testament baptism?

•Perhaps we need to confess our faults… Acknowledge and forsake some sin in our life…

Then know for sure that we are forgiven… Safe in the arms of Jesus.

Here it is church… His blood is just AS powerful today as it was when it was shed on the cross.

The need is for us to step into its life-giving flow as we stand and sing this song together.
