Jesus – The Power Of His Presence

Mark 4.35-41  Mark 5.1-43

This morning our study concerned Jesus – The Wonder Working Power In His Blood…

Tonight…We want to examine the power of His presence in our life.

We’ll do this by rehearsing four narratives about the POWER & PRESENCE of Jesus in the lives of four individuals… Then we’ll see how this power is available to us today.

So…Access a Bible and turn to Mark chapter four… We begin with the verse numbered thirty-five.

It came all of a sudden... Like most storms in life do.

It’s calm one moment...  Then all of a sudden we are being tossed on a tempestuous sea. It happened often on the Sea of Galilee… Something similar to what happened on Table Rock Lake in July… Where seventeen people drowned in a sudden storm.

As the boat begins to fill with water... The Apostles panic.

These are not novices... Some are experienced fishermen... They have been here before. Some of them have sailed this sea since childhood.

They know what could happen...What was gonna happen… If this storm was not calmed...

•But… In their fear...

•In the panic of the moment...

•In their efforts to keep the boat afloat...

They apparently forgot that Jesus... God-in-the-flesh... was asleep in the back oF the boat.

Mark says...

•When the waves had filled the ship...

•When it was evident that all that could be done... Was done...

•And that they were going to drown...

They woke Jesus saying... Master... Master... Get up... Don’t you care... Can’t you see... We’re gonna drown... We’re gonna perish in this storm.

We are a lot like these Apostles... Aren’t we?...

Sometimes when the storms of life threaten... We forget that we have Jesus in the boat with us... RIGHT?

The power and presence of Jesus are evident as He is only to speak three words... Peace be still.

•Just that quick the winds stopped blowing.

•The waves subsided.

•The lake is as flat as a mirror.

•Not just calm… Not just quiet.

The King James says what?... A great calm.

•Not a zephyr in the air.

•Not a breeze on your cheek.

•Clouds are gone.

•Moon and stars are shining.

I want you to note something here...This is a supernatural event...  This is A supernatural calm.

Why should this surprise us???... John… In his Gospel says that this is the same voice that spoke the universe into existence.

Jesus speaks and… all of nature… Every element…responds.

And they said one to another... Who is this?... What manner of man is this?...That all of nature responds to his voice?

Who is it that calms storms in my life and yours by the power of His presence?... Jesus… Amen?

The second narrative is found in Mark chapter five... Jesus has power over sin.

Their boat lands... In the region of the Gadarenes… Specifically in A cemetery.

The windstorm is over... But there’s another storm… Life is like that... Isn’t it?

A wild man!... One who lives among the tombs... Comes running down the beach toward them.

•He has cut himself... So he is scary looking... He’s bleeding.

•He has been bound with chains.

•He has broken them....  Probably still had chains hanging to wrist and ankles.

He’s crazy!... He’s not only crazy... He’s strong... He’s dangerous.

We know people like this... One just killed ten people and injured 20 more in Thousand Oaks, California.

This is another life-THREATENing moment!

But the presence of Jesus makes a difference… He commanded the evil spirits to come out of the man... And they did!!

Verse fifteen... The next morning the towns’ folk come to see Jesus… And there he is...

•The crazy man…

•The demon possessed…

•The sinner everyone was afraid of was there.

The Text says... HE WAS Sitting... Not running... Not out of control... But calm.  He’s dressed... No longer naked...No longer shackled... He’s in his Right Mind.

Church... Jesus can do this… for us... To us... With us.

Jesus can calm us… Give us peace & contentment by dealing with the sin in our lives.

Listen to these Scriptures...

•Come unto Me... All you that labor and are heavy laden... And I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you... And learn of me... For I am meek and lowly in heart... And you shall find rest for your souls.

Come now... Let us reason together... Says the Lord... Though your sins be as scarlet... They shall be as white as snow... Though they be red like crimson... They shall be as wool.

•There is therefore... No condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus... Who walk not after the flesh... But after the Spirit.

•Jesus has us free from the law of sin and death... For what the law could not do…What the law was powerless to do... God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering.

Listen to this church... The Bible teaches us that there is… no sin... No sinful situation… So ugly that Jesus does not have control over... That Jesus cannot and will not forgive... If we follow His instructions.

Our third narrative demonstrates Jesus’ power over disease.

Chapter five... Verse twenty-one… They are back on the other side of the Lake... A crowd has gathered… People are pressed about him.

We are going to meet two of these folk... One is Jairus... A synagogue ruler.

His daughter is dying... Jairus falls at the feet of Jesus.

•He pleads...

•He implores...

•He prays.

Jairus is desperate... So... Jesus heads toward Jairus’ house.

But before they’ve gone very far... In the press of the crowd... We meet someone else in a storm... Verse 25...  A woman in her own private storm… She’s bleeding... hemorrhaging.

Today…We call her condition advanced endometriosis.

She has suffered with this for twelve long years.

Been to several doctors... Spent all her money with medical clinics… And was no better... But Worse!...

With a desperate faith... She reaches... Strains every muscle... In Matthew’s version of this narrative... She touches the hem of His robe.

Touching the helm of His garment tells us that she was prone in the dirt. WE ARE WITNESSING A DESPERATE FAITH HERE.

Verse twenty-nine says... And straightway... Immediately... Her bleeding stopped... She was freed from her suffering.

Jesus has power over disease.

QUESTION!...How many of us here tonight feel this is Good news WE CAN USE?

Well... We almost forgot about Jairus...

The word comes verse thirty-five... Your daughter is dead.

Oh no!... Why did we take so long... If only we had not stopped... I can’t deal with this.

Listen to Jesus as he speaks to Jairus and us in verse thirty-six... Do not be afraid... Just believe... Jairus... Just have faith... A dEsparate faith.

Jesus walks in with Jairus and the elite of the elect... Peter... James... and John.

Everyone else is asked to leave.

Jesus takes the hand of the girl and says Tel-eth-a-kum...Little girl arise... Get up.

Immediately... The color returned to her cheeks... She stood right up... Walked around... Jesus said... Feed her.

Jesus has power over death… My and Your death!!... Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom ofGod... Neither can corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I show you a mystery... We shall not all sleep... But we shall all be changed... In a moment... In a flash... In the twinkling of an eye... At the last trump... For the trumpet shall sound... And the dead shall be raised incorruptible... And we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption... And this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption... And this mortal shall have put on immortality... Then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written... Death is swallowed up in victory. O death... Where is thy sting?... O grave... Where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin... And the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God...Which gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

•Jesus raised Jairus’ daughter.

•A few months later Lazarus...

•Then he raised himself from the dead...

•One day he will raise us.

Jesus’ presence in your life and mine will be our resurrection power… Giving us immortality.

Well…How many of us are facing a storm?...

•Anything making you anxious?... Afraid?

•Scared about your health?

•Concerned about some sin in your life?

•Unsure of your relationship with God?

•Worried about what’s gonna happen to your children or grandchildren?

Some of us may be facing the storm of...

•A lost job… A failing business...

•Perhaps our fear is bankruptcy...

•A marriage on the rocks...

•A terminal illness.

•A spiritual shortcoming...

•Some ugly sin that keeps dogging us.

Every week... Every week… Good people... Church members... Friends... Relatives... Ordinary folk… Come into my study.... seeking...Asking… Begging… For prayers in these kinds of storms.

Church... If we’re fortunate... We may not PRESENTLY be in a storm… But it won’t be long... Until we are called to… Visit the hospital... The cemetery... The emergency room… A storm could strike at any moment.

Now…We must know this... some storms can be calmed...

•By reading our Bible...

•By reading the right self-help book...

•By seeing the right counselor...

•By going to the right doctor...

•Perhaps it’s as simple as a loan from the bank...

•A word of encouragement from the church... Elders... Spouse... Parents... Teachers…etc.

•Maybe our storm could be calmed by the words... I forgive you!!

But...There are some storms over which we have NO control.

There are storms that man can’t do anything with... But Jesus can... Jesus can.

Listen to Jesus... Believe in Jesus... Trust in Jesus...

Matthew 19.26 says... With MAN some things are impossible... But with God all things are possible.

Mark 9.23 tells us... everything is possible for him who believes.

Notice now...

How can we access the power and presence of jesus today?

This is important!...

We must bring our storms to Jesus.

James tells us how… Is any among you afflicted?... Let him pray. Is any merry...Happy... Let him sing psalms. Is any sick among you?... Let him call for the elders of the church... And let them pray over him... Anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord... LISTEN NOW!... And the prayer of faith shall save the sick... And the Lord shall raise him up... And if he has committed sins... They shall be forgiven him. Confess your faults one to another... And pray one for another... That you may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

If you are in trouble... PRAY!!

If you are happy.... PRAY!!

If you are sick... PRAY!!

If you are caught up in sin... PRAY!!

If you are in need of forgiveness... PRAY!

Ask God to intervene… To

•Heal our diseases...

•Forgive our sins...

•Lift our burdens...

•Renew our spirits...

Then allow him to do the work he promises us he will do!

Secondly... Sometimes Jesus chooses not to calm the storm... But to strengthen the individual... So we can weather the storm.

Remember in the garden... The night before His death on the cross?... Jesus prayed that the cup of suffering be removed if possible.

God’s will was that Jesus...

• Face the storm...

• Experience the storm...

• Walk through the storm...

• Suffer the cross.

So Luke says... After he prayed... God sent an angel to come minister to Him... Strengthen Him... So he could endure the cup of the cross.

Paul prayed for his thorn in the flesh to be removed.

The answer was...

My grace is sufficient...

I will give you strength to overcome...

I will calm you... Paul... But not remove the storm.

Later we hear Paul say...

If this is the strength I am going to get...

If this is God’s grace at work...

Give me more thorns.

I delight in weaknesses... I delight in insults... I delight in hardships... In persecutions... In difficulties... For when I am weak... Then I am strong.

That’s Second Corinthians 12.10... Read itagain!...

You see... Sometimes God gives us inner strength and calm for our storms.

We must have a desperate faith.

In each of these narratives the people had a desperate faith.

They did all they could do... And then trusted in Jesus for the rest.

•The Hebrews’ writer says... Without such faith... It is impossible to come to God... To please God.

• James tells us... We must ask in faith… Without doubting... Without wavering.

Why is it that we can see God working in the lives of Bible Greats in both the Old and New Testaments... Yet we can’t believe He’s at work in our lives today.

• In Ephesians 3.20 Paul says... God is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine... According to his power that is at work within us.

• The Book of Hebrews ends with these words… May the God of peace… That great Shepherd of the sheep… Equip you with everything good for doing His will… And may he work in us what is pleasing to him.

• In Philippians… Paul contends that God will complete the work He started in us.

These verses tell us that the power for calming our personal and corporate storms is promised by God... Who is working in our lives!

Then finally... We must do what Jesus asks.

•At Jairus’ house it was... Put the people out... Tel-eth-A-cum... Little girl get up... Feed her.

•The woman with the twelve-year struggle of illness... Daughter... Your faith has made you well... Go in peace.

•The blind man in John nine was told... Go wash in the pool of Siloam.

•The woman taken in adultery was told... Go your way... And sin no more.

•At Lazarus’ grave... It was... Remove the stone.

We must be willing to do what Jesus asks?... Are we?... ARE WE?.. Or do we want to argue and debate the scriptures?

Are we willing to repent... Change our life... Place God on the Throne instead of self... Be willing to be Born Again in New Testament baptism?

Are we willing to let go of our favorite sin...Yield completely... Totally... To Jesus?

Decide tonight... Right now...

Allow Jesus to calm our storm… As we sing together.
