Listening To Jesus On Worry & Anxiety

Matthew 6.25-34

A few week’s ago…. On a Sunday Evening... We considered what Paul had to say about Worry and Anxiety from Philippians chapter four.

Remember... That in that lesson... We learned that we could live above Worry & Anxiousness…

• By learning to rejoice… Rejoice Always… And again I say rejoice.

• By being gentle minded… Having a gentle nature… Let your gentleness be evident to all.

• By sensing and practicing the presence of God in our life…. Paul writes… The Lord is near.

• Worry is inhibited by prayer... By prayer and petition… Present your request to God.

• By maintaining a spirit of thanksgiving…With thanksgiving present your request to God

• We learned that worry fades in the face of right thinking… Paul says... Think on these things... And he gives us eight things to consider thought-worthy.

Tonight... We listen to what Jesus has to say about worry from Matthew six… Beginningwith verse numbered twenty-five... Read with me from your Worship Handout… Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Working on this lesson… I read that someone has said all too many people live their lives... Crucified… Suspended… Between two thieves... Between the regrets from yesterday and the anxieties about tomorrow... It’s called worry!!

The word worry means to be torn in two.

The Greek word for worry means literally to have a divided mind.

And that’s what anxiety does... It divides our mind... Tears us apart… Emotionally.

You see... Our desires and intent may go in one direction... While our minds are set on worrying about something totally unrelated.

• This tension inhibits our work ethic...

• Robs us of sleep...

• Removes the joy of the moment...

• Worry works against our relationships with others... Even family...

• Worry & anxiety hinder our fellowship with God.

Worry is an internal tug-of-war pulling at us... Robbing us of ourfaith… Creating doubt.

WORRY has the potential of making us miserable.

Come... Let’s see what we can learn about worry from the lips of Jesus...

He says... Worry is unreasonable.

Verse 25... Do not worry about your life, what you’ll eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear, is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?

First… Worry is unreasonable because we tend to worry about the wrong things.

Jesus says if you’re going to worry about something... Make it something eternal...not temporal... If it’s not going to last... Don’t worry about it.

It was Paul who said... Do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. LISTEN NOW!… So fix your eyes not on what is seen… but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary… But what is unseen is eternal.

Jesus says… Set your mind on God & His Kingdom righteousness.

It was the Hebrews Writer who said… Let us fix our eyes upon Jesus.

Secondly... To worry about something we cannot change is unreasonable.  If we can change it... Change it... If we can’t... Don’t worry about it.  The important thing is the wisdom to know the difference.

Here it is church... As His children... We need to ask God to give us the wisdom to know the difference between the things we can change and should change… And those things we shouldn't worry about because we can't change them.

How do we obtain this how-to-know-the-difference wisdom?... Paul admonishes us to pray for wisdom.

So…we must ask tonight... How many of us have prayed for this kind of wisdom... Have we?... Really?

Third... Worry is unreasonable because it always exaggerates the problem.

Have you noticed that when we worry about something... It has a tendency to loom larger and larger every time we rehearse the worry.

Jesus is saying that worry is... Illogical...Unreasonable... Even harmful... Because it suspends us between the regrets of yesterday and the anxieties of tomorrow.

Worry Is Unnatural… Nature doesn’t worry!!!

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Consider the lilies. Yet King Solomon in all his glory was not clothed as beautifully as they.

God says... I take care of birds... Aren’t you a lot more valuable than they? Then He says... Look at the flowers... They’re absolutely beautiful... But they don’t worry.

Jesus is saying.... Animals don’t worry... Plants don’t worry... The only thing in all of creation that worries... That doesn’t trust God... Is people... Us.

Listento Psalm 145.16... God satisfies the desire of every living thing... Church... this should include us... This should include us... Does it?

Worry is Unhelpful.

Jesus says it just doesn’t work... Fear... Worry... Anxiety... Doubt... Doesn’t accomplish anything good... Look at verse 27... Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?...

• Worry can’t make us taller...

• It can’t make us skinnier...

• It can’t help us live one day longer.

• When we worry about our past... Does that change it?... No!

• When we worry about the future... Does that control it?... No!

So Jesus concludes... Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Worry Is... ungodly.

When we worry... We’re acting as if God... doesn’t exist... Doesn’t care... Or Is UNABLE... To do what He’s promised to do.

Worry is really a lack of trust in God. Why is it that we trust God with our eternal salvation... Yet will not trust Him with...

• Our family problems...

• Our financial woes...

• Our health issues...

• Our relational difficulties.

There is a way we could say that... Worry is practical atheism!

Listen... If we don’t get anything else from our lesson... Get this... Worry indicates that we may have a misunderstanding of God AND what he is like… What He has and is doing on our behalf.

• Do we understand that He is our... Father... Shepherd... Guide... Savior... Lord?

• Do we understand He promises to work all things out... To our good... To our benefit… And betterment.

• Do we trustHim?... Really?... Then why are we WORRYING??

OK… Let’s try something together… Let’s identify our greatest worry.

I’ll give you time to decide… What is your greatest worry…

Take one of those visitor’s slips and jot down your most persistent worry.

Now… If the person sitting next to you is your greatest worry… Just draw an arrow in that direction… God will know what you mean.

Does everybody have a worry in mind?

Listen now as Jesus tells us how to rid ourselves of that worry... Ready?...

First... He says... Place God first in every arena of life

Listen closely as I read Matthew 6.32-33 from the living Bible... Your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well what we need... And... And He will give them to us... IF... IF... We give Him first place in our life and live as He wants us to live.

You see church... Worry is always a... Warning light... A caution signal...

• Indicating we have some mixed up values…

• It means something is wrong...

• Something’s out of sync...

• Something else has taken first place in our life besides God and faith in Him.

• Remember the commandment from Mount Sinai was No other gods before me.

• In our text… Jesus is found saying... Place God and His Kingdom righteousness first.

Love God with all your... Heart... Mind... Strength... Soul... All youR being.

Listen to this church... We may not want to hear it... But Any area where God is not in control has the potential of becoming a source of worry for us.

It doesn’t matter what it is... Whenever... Wherever... In whatever...We fail to put God first... That area becomes a source of worry... We can count on it... Because nothing was meant to take His first-place-status.

Number two... Live one day at a time.

Don't worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will have its own worries. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Jesus is saying... Don’t open up your umbrella until it starts raining.

Here it is... When we worry about tomorrow’s problems... We miss today’s blessing.

True...The future can be overwhelming... But fortunately we receive it one day at a time.

It’s okay to plan for tomorrow... Jesus teaches us this... But don't worry about it.

In teaching us to pray... Jesus didn’t say... Give us our...

• Yearly bread!

• Monthly bread!

• Weekly bread!

• But DAILY bread!!

Why?...Because He wants us to depend on Him one-day-at-a-time.

Friday morning... When I walked into the men’s scrub-room... Pete... One of the HeartTeam’s Scrub-Techs from the Mount Comfort Congregation was there... I said good morning Pete... How are you do’in?... He said... Randall it’s one of those days when I want to say... Jesus just take the wheel. Wow Pete... Can I use that in my lesson Sunday?...

Live one day at a time... Get up every morning saying... Jesus take the wheel.

Trust God to care for Things Beyond Our Control.

We may not want to hear it… But the root of worry is in verse 30... O you of little faith.

Worry and trust can’t operate in the same heart at the same time.

Faith and worry are mutually exclusive!!

So...What do you say to the person who is in the midst of crisis...

• Maybe they’ve just received an unfavorable diagnoses...

• Maybe they’re dealing with a terminal disease?

• Perhaps they’ve just lost a loved one.

Listen to these verses...

Philippians 4.6 & 7... Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

First Corinthians 15.57-58... Thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

There’s an interesting narrative in Second Chronicles chapter twenty... Jehoshaphat was going to battle against three enemy nations... Judah was outnumbered three to one… There was no way he was going to win this battle.

So... God says... Jehoshaphat...

• Do not be afraid

• Don’t be discouraged…

• Don’t let this crisis get the best of you… For the battle is not yours... The battle belongs to the Lord.

Here it is church... When life tumbles in... When times become tough... When things are beyond our control... I believe that as children of God we must transfer our problems from our shoulders to God’s...From our control to His.

First Peter 5.7Here Peter speaks of this transfer of our worry and anxiety… Cast all… Your cares... Your anxieties... Upon Him… for He cares for you.

Got some things beyond your control??... Give them to Jesus... The battle belongs to the Lord!!

John 14.1… When the world of the Apostles was about to tumble in… Jesus said…  Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am… I am the way and the truth and the life. No-one comes to the Father except through me.

When trouble comes… Let not your heart be troubled… You have faith in god… Have faith in me.

Let me tell you something that is always out of our control... Forgiveness of our sins.

There’s no way we can forgive ourselves... We don’t have the resources to do that...

But there’s no reason to worry... God has promised us forgiveness.

And the resource is nothing less than the blood of Jesus.

Maybe you need to become a child of God tonight by... Faith... Repentance... And NewTestament Baptism... Then you can claim all of God's promises as a SON.

Perhaps we need to rededicate our life to Jesus by putting Him and His Kingdom first once more.

Maybe we need the prayers of the church to help us overcome some ugly worry that’s… Robbing us of our peace… Making us miserable.

Come…Let’s give God our sins and worries… As we stand and sing together.
