“Thou Shall Not Commit Adultery”

Exodus 20.14  Matthew 5.27-28 Romans 1.18-27 & 32

Perhaps the most difficult thing for we humans to do is to submit our will to another… To saySpeak Lord… I will believe and obey… I will do whatever you command.

This is what our Sunday series is about…

• Commands that have been in place since the beginning of time.

• Commands that make possible a correct relationship with our Creator and Savior.

• Commands that help us maintain an enjoyable relationship with one another.

• Commands that help guarantee us the good life that God wishes us to have.

We know these principles as the Ten Commandments.

This morning… Thou shall not commit adultery.

It’s interesting to note that in the 1631 edition of the Bible... There was a mistake made by the publisher... The typesetter accidentally left one word out of the text... Our text this morning read... Thou shall commit adultery.  As a result of this mistake... This edition of the Scriptures was called the Wicked Bible.

However... It seems that this is the edition that many have chosen to live by today. For instance... Recent surveys indicate that...

• 60 plus percent of American men and over 50% of American women acknowledge that they have been unfaithful to their spouse.

• 74% of men surveyed said they would have an affair if… IF… They knew they would never get caught... 68% of the women agreed to such a behavior.

Think about what this means in a congregation of 300 people... Someone, maybe several someones, is sleeping with someone else’s wife... Even as we study this subject.

Do these statistics make you uncomfortable... I hope they do!

Perhaps this is agood place to see what God has to say about Adultery...

From our Text – Exodus 20.14... Thou shall not commit adultery.

Leviticus 20.10-21 Gives us... Vivid...Explicit... Details of what God considers to be adultery... And gives the punishment for illicit sexual behavior between different people...

• Spouses...

• Parents...

• Siblings...

• In-laws...

• Children...

• Same sex individuals...

• Even animals...

Most of which are described as worthy of capital punishment in God’s sight.

Church... We need to read this chapter... We need to know God’s thoughts on such behavior. Take this Worship Bulletin home... Review what God says.

We need to allow God... Not our Supreme Court... To define what sexual behavior is sin and is not!

Now... Let’s hear Jesus on the matter... Matthew 5.27 & 28... You have heard that it was said... Do not commit adultery. But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Then Paul from First Corinthians 6.9-11... Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Our New Testament closes with a final warning... Revelation 22.14 & 15... Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts...the sexually immoral... Murderers, Idolaters and everyone who loves and practices a lie.

Church... I believe it would be lax of me if I did not share with you again Jesus’ statement of what God considers adultery... A quick review of Jeff’s meaningful lesson Sunday Night on LUST.

Jesus takes this seventh principle out of the physical… And expands it into a mental concept… A mental law… Jesus said lust was sin… Looking on the opposite sex to lust after them... He didn’t say lust led to sin... He said Lust is a sin.

Like hate is mental murder... Lust is mental adultery.

This is not the first time that lust is said to be a sin in Scripture…

• In our text... the last of the Ten is “Thou shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.”

Coveting is lust...Whether it is our neighbor’s... wife... livestock... or some other... possession... position... gift... or blessing.

• Then it was Solomon who wrote Proverbs 6.25… Speaking of a seductive woman… Do not lust in your heart after the beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes…

Then He reasoned... Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned?... Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched?

You see the sin of adultery goes much deeper than just the act…

• It includes our thoughts....

• Has its beginning in the heart.

Jesus is saying that sexual fancies with an individual NOT our spouse is wrong… a sin.

No… I didn’t say mental adultery is a reason for divorce… Don’t put words in Jesus’ mouth… Jesus said… LUST IS A SIN… IT IS MENTAL ADULTRY.

If sexual immorality… If adultery... Is to be stopped in our culture… It first must be stopped in the MIND… In our thoughts.

James said…  We  are drawn away by our own lust …  Our own thoughts… Evil desires.

No… Jesus is not forbidding us to look at a woman or vice versa…He is forbidding LUSTFUL LOOKING…Let’s be honest this morning… We all know the difference here?… DON’T WE?

Martin Luther said… We can’t keep a bird from flying over our head… But we can keep it from building a nest there.

Peter speaks of those with eyes full of adultery… They see every one of the opposite sex as a potential sexual partner.

When lust is given into… When... Fed… Fondled… Pursued…THE RESULT IS SINful behavior!!... EVERY TIME! EVERYTIME!!!

You see church.... It’s one thing for an evil thought to flash through our mind like an unexpected… Uninvited… Guest. It is something else… Something Jesus calls sin… When we welcome it… Feed it… Entertain it. We might let our mind go… Imagining… Fantasizing… About how… When… Where… And what if… And somewhere about that point… We must agree with Jesus that this uninvited thought has crossed the line between right and wrong… Between thought and lust.

Our hearts… Our thoughts… Our fantasies… Are subject to God’s judgment… Just as sure as our behavior.

You see… God demands… RIGHTEOUSNESS INSIDE OUT… AMEN?

Well… How did we get to where we are in our culture?

Because we have allowed Satan to deceive us… Lie to us…

And we have bought into his lies...

We’ve bought into our living in... A new… Modern… expansive…Morality.

This was the first lie that Eve fell for in the garden… Wasn’t it?

Satan told her… You are out of step with the world… You are living by an old morality… God just wants to hold you back… He just doesn’t want you to enjoy all there is to life… All there is to this expansive creation. You eat of this tree… And you will know things that you never dreamed of previously… Your mind will be expanded...And you will be as wise as God.

Sexual immorality is not new and modern… Listen to this… Sexual anarchy is here… It has assumed extreme forms and spread throughout a large part of the world population… There’s an increase of sexual perversions… A shameless sexual promiscuity has greatly increased. They seduce members of the same family. Relations between father and daughter… Son and mother are not unknown. In fact, contemporary authors rejoice in relationships with two sisters or a mother and her daughter. Adultery, rape, prostitution have greatly increased. Homosexual love has entered the mores of the population, and contemporary authors seem sadistically to enjoy the enumeration of such a variety of sexual perversions.

Sound familiar?... Sound like something from this morning’s newspaper?… Sure does!!… But it was written forty-five hundred years ago in Egypt.

This sexual revolution… This rebellion… Against moral authority… Didn’t help Egypt… Won’t help us… When will we learn?

A second lie is that adultery is a private matter… Nobody else’s business.

We have bought into this lie to the extent that today we have laws that keep abortionists from informing parents of their children’s destructive sexual choices.

Truth is… Our Sexual choices are not a private matter at all.

• Teen lives are ruined...

• Marriages torn apart...

• Homes destroyed...

• Children aborted or left without parents... Or a parent without resources to raise them...

• Millions of tax dollars are expended each month paying for the sexual sins of our supposed…

enlightened ones…

Truth is church… My and your sexual choices have repercussions that are well beyond our imagination.

God contends that… our sins… Your and my sex choices… Extend into our family for generations to come... Sin is never a private matter.

We've been told... We must free ourselves from the repression of traditional Christian morality… If we want to enjoy good mental health… We’ve gotta let go of traditional sin-caused guilt.

Freud believed that guilt must be done away with totally… If we were ever to be happy. He believed that religion was some kind of neurosis…

• That we should never repress our feelings…

• Or discipline our behavior...

But we should do whatever our imagination and hormones brought to mind.

But the truth is that psychologists and psychiatrists today admit that sexual relations growing out of the so-called new morality have…

• Significantly increased the number of people in our mental hospitals…

• Have caused emotional breakdowns…

• Have destroyed marriages... Devastated home and family life...

• And is the primary factor in the increase of teen and college age suicide.

Church… We cannot continue to break God’s... spiritual… emotional… And moral… laws… And expect to stay out of... Mental… Emotional… and Spiritual… Turmoil!

We cannot continue to rebel against the commands of the one who created us… And knows what is best for our well-being… AMEN?

Lie number four...Smart-thinking adults would never enter marriage without testing sexual compatibility.

This kind of thinking… Brings us into every conceivable live-in situation possible today… Most of which have no thoughts about marriage… But just want to… In some fashion…  Justify their own sin behavior.

Sociologists have never proven this line of thinking to be beneficial… Not once!!

Every study… Every study… Of any creditability… Has shown that there is a much higher incidence of divorce among those who live together before marriage.

Plus… Plus… There is a much higher incidence of infidelity after marriage in this group... And a lower incidence of infidelity among couples who respected and obeyed God’s relational commands regarding sexual behavior.

Well WHY?…Why in the world do we continue to believe satan’s lies?

In face of such... Unhappiness…Suffering… and Confusion… Why do we continue to disobey this eternal principle?... Either physically… Or mentally?

Because words are powerful.

Our culture has changed the words… Thus changed our thinking.

We’ve been persuaded that…

• Immorality is moral…

•That wrong is right… Evil is good.

Scripture warns us of a time and situation when Satan convinces us of such… Isaiah 5.20 says… Woe to those who call evil good and good evil… Who speak of darkness for light and light for darkness? Who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.

By changing the words... We’re convinced that abortion is alright… Because what’s in the womb is not a person… But a fetus... Simply a product of conception.

As a result… We can treat this product as we see fit… As if it were a wart or mole.

The word adultery convicts us… However… Having an affair has become acceptable… Even exciting in our culture.

We fall for Satan’s lies… Because we do not know God’s Word.

• Do we really know what God has to say about sexual immorality?

• Do we know this seventh... Eternal… Relationary… Principle?

• Do we understand what Jesus said about sexual immorality?

• Do we know First Corinthians 6.9?... Do not be deceived...The wicked... The sexually immoral... The idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders... Nor thieves...The greedy... Drunkards.. Slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

The good life here… And heaven hereafter… Await those who love God… And obey His commandments… Are we willing?

Here’s the good news... Paul told the Corinthian Church that some of them were guilty of such sins... But Jesus said… We are sanctified by truth…And God’s word is truth… By obedience to His truth... We have been set free…

• Free from sin…

• Free from guilt…

• Free from the eternal consequences of death.

Listen... We are all guilty this morning of Sexual Immorality in some form or another… At some time in our life.

It’s unlikely that we have reached our age and not thought or done things that were wrong… But there’s freedom in Christ.

Jesus sets us free when we are washed in His blood... By... Faith… Repentance… Confession… When we’re born again in New Testament baptism.

Perhaps we’re involved in a sexual relationship right now that’s in direct violation of this eternal principle… Either mentally or physically…

• Don’t listen to Satan and his lies…

• Don’t allow our world and its culture to… Squeeze… You into its mold of reasoning.

• Don’t rebel against God.

But come confessing acknowledging to God your sin... He promises to forgive… Neither do I condemn you… Go your way and sin no more.

Let’s each of us be set free from all our guilt... As we stand and sing this song together.
