Just Don't Do It!

Rick Warren tells about flying into turbulence. Becoming somewhat concerned, he ask the stewardess; "Tell me about this aircraft; how often do jets like this crash?" She said, "Well, sir, as a rule only once!"

Anxiousness and worry start as a trickle, a stream, then a river. Before we know it, Satan is controlling all our thoughts; everything is focused on our fear. Fear turns into a habit, a lifestyle. Before we know it anxiousness, worry, fear are running and ruining our life.

Jesus addresses this sin problem in Matthew 6.25-34.

Let's note some of His thoughts...

Worry is unreasonable: "Do not worry about your life, what you'll eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear, is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?"

• Worry is unreasonable because we are anxious about the wrong things.

• It's unreasonable to worry about what we cannot change. If we can change it, change it, if not don't worry about it.

• Unreasonable because it exaggerates the problem.

Worry is unnatural. "Look at the birds of the air; they do no sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?" "Consider the lilies!" Like the birds and the flowers, we are not born to worry. It's a learned trait. Since we learned it, we can control it.

Unhelpful. Jesus says it just doesn't work. It's useless! "Who by worrying can add a single hour to his life?” Anxiousness and worry are a waste of our time and energy, and rob us of our faith in God.

Unnecessary. "If God cares for the flowers that are here today and gone tomorrow, won't He surely care more for you! O you of little faith?" God is saying: "I'm your Father, trust me" It was Jesus who said: "If your earthly fathers know how to give good gifts, how much more your Father in Heaven."

Worry is ungodly, unchristian. When we worry, we're behaving as if God didn't exist or will not do as he promises. We're behaving like an atheist! We're saved by faith, become children of God by faith, we live by faith, without faith it is impossible to please God. We gotta ask, where is our faith?

With these thoughts in mind,

How do we rid ourselves of worry?

Place God first in every arena of life. "Seek first His kingdom, His righteousness." "No other gods before Me." "Love God with all your heart mind, strength, and soul." God will have no rivals, that includes anxiousness and worry!

Live one day at a time. "Don't worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will have its own worries, each day has enough trouble of its own." Two days we are not to worry about: Yesterday and Tomorrow! Jesus taught us to pray for today, live in the moment: "Give us our daily bread."

Trust God for things beyond our control! "O you of little faith." Worry and truth can't operate in the same heart at the same time. Genuine Biblical faith excludes worry: "This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God" (1 John5.4-5).

Anxious today?

Then let's reprogram our mind with these Scriptures...

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus"(Philippians 4.6-7).

• "Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord" (Psalm 27.14).

• "Our fears for today... Worries about tomorrow... Even the powers of hell... Nothing in all creation will... Can separate us from the love of God" (Romans 8.38-39 NLT).
